I’m Rebecca, owner of MEOW, mum to Isla (born June 2020) and Rupert (born May 2022), and proud owner of a Puggle, Louie. Here’s the story behind MEOW.
Growing up, I always felt uncertain about my future, switching between careers and lacking a sense of identity. Animals were my only constant passion. After trying various jobs, I ended up in property management, but after discovering I was pregnant in late 2019 and struggling with toxic work environments, I realised it wasn’t the right path for me.
Following the birth of Isla and Rupert, I focused on motherhood but still felt lost regarding my own ambitions. Then, in March 2023, a visit to a cat café in Poland sparked an idea. The concept of combining cat rescue with a café was revolutionary to me, and I saw an opportunity to bring this idea to life in my hometown.
Back home, I surveyed the local community, and despite some negativity, the positive response was overwhelming. Partnering with Friends of Felines to rescue and rehome cats was the perfect match. I then embarked on the lengthy process of securing a government loan, which, against the odds, was approved.
After months of renovations at 7 High Street, including extensive work on the building, we opened MEOW on June 3rd, 2023. I’m immensely proud of the hard work that went into getting it ready. The café provides a space for rescue cats to find new homes, offers great coffee, and welcomes families with children. A huge thank you to my fantastic team for their unwavering support.
Thanks to the success of our Halstead branch, we’re thrilled to have opened our second location at Eld Lane, Colchester. This exciting expansion gives us the opportunity to support even more cats in need, and I can’t wait to see MEOW continue to grow and make an even greater impact.
